1:43 pm - Reinventing snark

You know, I really wish I could go to Scott McCloud's giant gaming convention this year, so he could tell me in person how advertising- and merchandising-supported comics are an evolutionary dead end and no way for creators to make a living.

6:47 pm - Social engineering

Q: Hey, would you mind running some unknown binary with admin privileges on your network-connected computer? It's not harmful! You can tell by the way that I just said it's not harmful!

A: Root me harder, big boy!

Dear god, I hope none of these people ever get offered candy by a stranger who has a van parked around the corner.

6:58 pm - Dear Lazyweb

You know, I'm actually curious now: are there any iPod competitors that are currently being sold with Ogg Vorbis support out-of-the-box, built-in, and ready-to-play? If I ever switch out of the Apple ecosystem, it'd be nice to not get screwed again by my earlier optimism about Ogg's viability as a format....

1:04 pm - Oh my aching organs and skeletons

I have spent a long time wanting to have my very own hacksaw.

Needing to have my very own hacksaw, and being forced to buy one and put it to use, however, has been a vast disappointment.

Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned here.

7:05 pm - Love me I'm a lib^W^Wopen source

You know, if I were working on any of those Linux-based cell phones or mp3 players or set-top boxes, I'd call together every single one of my partners, put us all in a big conference room, lock the door, and not unlock it until someone figured out why people would rather use buffer overflows to break into iPhones and iPods and Apple TVs than develop for platforms where they're not just invited, they're pandered to.

And then, just as folks started to move toward the now-unlocked exit, I'd bar the door and tell them that I was just kidding. They don't get to leave for real until they also figure out why Amazon's best-selling Ogg Vorbis player is almost as popular as a talking Elvis robot. Almost.

8:17 pm - For posterity

The Python people looked at Perl and say "My God, man! You're not banging on the keyboard enough! Why don't you spend more time typing? It'll be good for you."

The Ruby people looked at Perl and say "My God, man! You're spending so much time banging out useless punctuation! Why don't you spend less time typing? It'll be good for you."

And that is why I don't use Python anymore.
